Good credit and a stable job should have been enough for Matt Schilling to get a low interest rate on a bank loan to fix his Jeep. Despite the tough economy, the 27-year-old figured he would find an affordable note with ease. Schilling wanted to replace a blown engine.

Area homeless people can find shelter from the cold and rain this winter at Cal Expo. The winter shelter, operated by Volunteers of America and funded by the county Department of Human Assistance, opens Monday and will remain open through late March. Loan consolidation options are more limited now than they were for students who graduated college a few years ago. The U.S. Department of Education is nearly the only loan consolidator in the nation as many lenders have suspended consolidations because of the credit crunch.
