The U.S. Department of Education has blocked California's attempt to sell its student-loan guarantor, EdFund, and plans to sever ties with the Rancho Cordova-based operation by October, according to a letters obtained by The Bee.

The Senate will hold its second committee hearing next Wednesday on the status of for-profit education in the United States. Enrollment at for-profit colleges and trade schools has tripled in the last decade to about 1.8 million, or nearly 10 percent of the nations higher education students.

Amy Davis, single mother of two, received a $700 grant from P.E.O. Chapter NO in Boone. P.E.O. is the Philanthropic Educational Organization. Davis was selected to receive the grant due to her status as a single mother returning to school to study nursing.
